L8 Legionella Risk Assessment

Legionella bacteria is the name given to a group of bacteria that is commonly found in the environment, which can cause a range of diseases that are collectively called legionellosis. A potentially fatal form of legionellos is iscalled legionnaires disease, which is a type of pneumonia which can be fatal in approximately 12% of reported cases.  Legionellosis is normally contracted by inhaling legionella bacteria, either in tiny droplets of water or in droplet nuclei (the particles left after the water has evaporated) contaminated with legionella.

Health and safety legislation makes it a legal requirement for employers to undertake suitable and sufficient assessments to identify and assess the risk of exposure to legionella bacteria from work activities and water systems on their premises.

Safety & Environmental Consulting's legionella risk assessments are conducted in accordance with the Control of Legionella Bacteria in Water Systems - Approved Code of Practice (L8).  Our assessment covers hot and cold water systems.

Our risk assessment will:

  • Identify and evaluate potential sources of risk from legionella bacteria.
  • Identify the particular means by which exposure to legionella bacteria is to be prevented.
  • Where prevention is not reasonably practicable, the particular means by which the risk from exposure to legionella bacteria will be controlled.
